• What: In Hal's Big Buddy session Ingersoll is the caustic counter-voice: the older players are "here because they want the Show," he sniffs; he muses "I know just where I stand at all times" and "E Unibus Pluram"; pressed on what he hates, he says "The structure's what I hate the most of all," and concedes "I miss my dog." Hal, lying there, creatively visualizes slapping Ingersoll into the opposite wall and pounding overheads onto his skull, and can't tell whether the kid is being insolent. He has already acquiesced to Lyle's diagnosis: "the kid so repels Hal because Hal sees in the kid certain parts of himself he can't or won't accept. None of this ever occurs to Hal when Ingersoll's in the room. He wishes him ill."
