As Hal and the others are ushered in, it strikes him as "somehow sinister" that she has apparently been in C.T.'s office all this time, emptying Tavis's personal brass wastebaskets into her canvas-sided cart, staring at a point just to the side of Hal's own stare; the next day's dining-hall scene has Hal recalling that he "read fear in" her as she left with his litter (122). Establishes her dual E.T.A.-Ennet location — the hinge of the cartridge-haul beat that follows.
