• What: Charlotte Treat is an Ennet House resident, a former prostitute now reformed and prim, excused from the outside menial job other residents must work because she carries the Virus/H.I.V. Gately's narration fixes her portrait: violently red hair the color of a red crayon; a "cut-rate whore's hard half-pretty face"; cheeks deeply pitted with scars she packs with foundation and blush, which with the hair gives her the look of a "mean clown." Her devotion to needlepoint — needle in and out of drum-tight cotton — is something Gately, four months on Staff, privately finds "suspect": all those needles. From the old life she carries a small green dragon tattooed on her calf and another tattoo on a breast about which she has set a recovery "Boundary" against showing Tiny Ewell.
