Bain (n269): "something just was not right," "indictment-proof," the philanthropist "closing in, arms open wide, smiling." Hal (scene 179), imagining Avril's lovers as "generic": "Bain, graduate students, grammatical colleagues, Japanese fight-choreographers, the hairy-shouldered Ken N. Johnson, the Islamic M.D. Himself had found so especially torturing" — tying her "passion for hiddenness" to JOI's many films titled "Cage." (Cf. the "over thirty Near Eastern medical attachés" and "unnamed bisexual bassoonist" of JOI's paranoid conversationalist rant, event 32; and n269's "swarthily foreign-looking monilial-internist... dear and cherished friend.")
