Abandoned All Hope

E.T.A. drug slang for quitting marijuana for good: because marijuana in the novel's Boston is "Bob Hope" (see that entry), to Abandon All Hope is to give up the Bob entirely. Pemulis names the move during the long drug summit of endnote 321 ("Abandon All Hope," p. 1064), and Hal adopts it: endnote 334 glosses the phrase as "Hal's Pemulis-inspired trope for putting down the secret daily Bob H." — a wry dark joke that hardens into how Hal names his abstinence to himself (p. 1076). Hal's withdrawal is dated from it: "the horrific way his head's felt, increasingly, since he abruptly Abandoned All Hope" (p. 796), a condition that by the next page is "the Abandonment of Hope" (p. 797).
