Infinite Notes — co-(re)-reading notes for Infinite Jest

TL;DR

A modest, free-form fan wiki: a co-reading crib for Infinite Jest — 38 character stubs, 4 place pages, one long annotated timeline, and a hand-built interactive relationship graph. Two provenance layers: the note core is Rob Friesel (founddrama) + collaborators, 2012-03-29→2017-01-19 (partly in German); Robin Stammer forked and republished it 2026-03-22 (Jekyll migration, the whole relationship graph, the timeline's approximate-real-year footnotes, an expanded Erdedy page). Value here is popularity-axis: it shows which readings ordinary re-readers treated as settled (acid-disfigurement stated flat, YDAU≈2009 mapped without hedging in the body) vs. left open (the head-dig, Orin-as-mailer, the wraith, Hal-as-machine — all marked with the notes' trademark trailing "?"). The graph is a second independent relationship map to diff against our own site graph.

Key claims

• Structure. Page refs are to the first hardcover edition, footnotes cited by number [about.md]. The character index is a full faction-grouped roster (~90 named figures, most one-liners) [characters.md]. The timeline is the largest note — a subsidized-year event spine from Winter 1960 (Tucson) to the Year of Glad (Hal in Arizona), flagging its own uncertainties in a bracketed editorial voice ("CONFLICT?", "ed.", trailing "?") [timeline.md].
• Approximate-real-year mapping (2026 Stammer addition): the timeline TOC glosses each subsidized year with a gray real-world year — Whopper ≈2002 … YDAU ≈2009 … Year of Glad ≈2010 — under a footnote calling the mapping a non-canonical fan reconstruction [timeline.md TOC, ^1] (see THEORY below).
• The relationship graph (2026 Stammer addition) — a D3 force-directed map of 77 nodes across 8 groups + a "Places" class, hand-weighted by size and typed edges (family/romantic/adversarial/connection), explicitly "Based on the [original diagram (PDF)]" (the Sam Potts IJ diagram, byte-identical per PROVENANCE.md) [graph.md; assets/graph.js].

• Oddball specifics worth keeping: Ennet House is Unit 6 of the seven-unit Enfield Marine complex, Unit 7's rent paid by E.T.A. • Self-flagged in-source textual conflicts (caught, unresolved): Himself's death dated 1 April vs. earlier notes' "10 August" [timeline.md YTMP]; the ONANtiad "76 minutes" (fn) vs. "4 hours" (narrative) [timeline.md, 8 Nov].
• German stub (2012-era collaborator): the Erdedy page opens — "notorischer Kiffer, der ständig mit dem Kiffen aufhören will und sich dadurch in immer neue Lügengeschichten verstrickt" ("a notorious pothead who constantly wants to quit and thereby keeps entangling himself in ever-new webs of lies") (German in source; translation ours) [_characters/Erdedy.md].

THEORY: Joelle's mother threw acid and it disfigured Joelle — the veil covers real deformity

• Notes: The source itself carries the beauty-side counter-datum without reconciling it: the same timeline quotes Joelle, "I am so beautiful I am deformed" (pp. 538), immediately adding "(but by then, Gately doesn't believe her)" [timeline.md, 11 Nov], and the Joelle page closes on the open question "WHAT DID JOELLE SEE?? (pp. 958)." Against the record: the source picks the acid-disfigured side and states it as settled — matching the acid camp but not the archive's posture, which holds joelle-veil a live crux (Carlisle's both-in-sequence reading is the best-evidenced block; dysmorphia/Notkin-unreliable is a competing lean) — see gc-ep040, gc-ep032-ramji, and the joelle-veil adjudication.

THEORY: Himself made Infinite Jest to reach Hal — to make him feel and converse

THEORY: What is in Himself's head, and why Hal + Wayne + Gately dig it up

THEORY: Orin may be the one mailing the samizdat copies around

THEORY: Hal as HAL — a machine so programmed it comes undone
