IJ Book Club Ep. 06: Potential May Be Worse Than None, Jim — anti-ONAN list, videophony worked at length, Pemulis's urine economy, the 1960 garage monologue (pp. ~144–172)

source

TL;DR

Meeting six (early-roster Zoom era): the anti-ONAN groups list, the videophony section worked at satisfying length — the double-bind, masks-to-tableaus arc, and anti-vanity return mapped onto 2023 media life (Instagram-preview headlines as the all-caps headers' descendants, wired-headphone and flip-phone status signaling, the pour-over as tech-refusal chic) — Pemulis's urine economy read as institutionally convenient (the radar-detector both-sides analogy; ETA has everything to gain and no visible prevention culture), and the 1960 garage monologue given the session's best work: the find that the Himself name recurses up a generation — in the scene it is Jim's own father who carries it (p. 163, ASR-derived) — alongside the create-a-tennis-player project recursing down, the triple hanky/limit repetition, potential-as-curse, the As-of-Yore endnote closing the loop (JOI filmed this very scene), and an I-was-in-there / I'm-in-here echo across generations. Prose-form claims ledgered too: the page-long paragraph as deliberate pain-infliction, the prescriptivism-to-descriptivism key change, the book-as-song defense of the ending. ASR transcript: paraphrase only.

Key claims

  • Coverage: from the anti-ONAN groups list through videophony (pp. ~144–151 territory), the Pemulis urine/M.M.P. paragraph cluster (p. 154 named for the Avril–Pemulis window; page refs ASR-derived), the 1960 garage monologue (p. 163 named), ending at the DMZ acquisition and the levirate mosaic. Participants this session: Jamie leading; Jaime, Erica (audio trouble at open), Muhammad, Jack (arriving late, newborn in tow); Liz thanked and dismissed at the top as a running bit; Sasha absent.
  • The ONAN recap for the record (relayed as consolidation): Gentle's clean-up-America platform discharged by giving the annularly polluted Concavity to Canada; the panel notes the redundancy habit in names (O.N.A.N. itself; Ennet House Drug and Recovery House) and that the alphabetical terrorist list isn't alphabetical (all the LE-groups plus one C entry third) — read as a people-we-don't-like list rather than a violence census, since non-violent environmental groups make it on anyway.
  • The all-caps-headers puzzle worked without resolution: the exam-question theory (the videophony section as question-and-answer), the panel recalling Hal's B-plus-graded essay (with the observation that Wallace graded himself B-plus); a clickbait-evolution reading from one panelist (see the prescience block); left open on-air.
  • The Avril–Pemulis window (p. 154, ASR-derived) flagged as load-bearing for their later interaction: Avril aware that Pemulis cares for Mario (the fish-in-brine line recalled as-said, ASR) — a relationship datum the panel had forgotten existed.
  • The urine-economy reading: Pemulis sells the drugs and the clean urine (the cough-medicine-that-reschedules-your-cough dream; the radar-gun company that also sells the detectors); ETA administration has everything to gain from passes (a quarter of ranked over-15s couldn't test clean; the panel recalls the conversationalist scene's suggestion the administration doses the Incandenza boys steroidally), shows no visible prevention culture, and Pemulis operates undisguised with a Fenway change-vendor rig — tacit allowance if not collaboration. (No theory record lane exists for institutional complicity — watched, not proposed.)
  • Pemulis texture: the optics scholarship (the one James O. Incandenza geometrical-optics scholarship, kept by a GPA layer) giving sanctioned access to the late director's equipment, some useful to unrelated enterprises — read as a deliberate wink; the M.M.P. paragraph-opener repetition run (five consecutive paragraph heads) noticed as designed; friendship as non-negotiable currency tied back to the Big Buddy material; Pemulis judged more plot-important than he first appears.
  • The DMZ acquisition: the tail-shaking tradecraft against the transparently coded phone call (the darts-at-28 bit); DMZ's Madame Psychosis street name registered with the local-DJ-names-a-drug absurdity; the DMT confusion raised and sorted (time-dilation lore attaching to the wrong initialism); Hal waiting very casually — like Erdedy — with the Riverside Hamlet (lazy symbolism, the lead concedes) under the levirate mosaic, which gets the full Onan explainer and the observation that the attaché also sits under Byzantine erotica — the attaché-as-Hal's-father theory resurfacing on the shared-taste axis (see ijbc-ep02's designed-red-herring block; the panel itself stays at could-be).
  • JOI's true genius question worked from print's sentence — the late father "was revered as a genius in his original profession without anybody ever realizing what he really turned out to be a genius at" (p. 156): the optics-defense first career, the annulation, ETA, film — with the panel's candidate answer being the lethally addictive entertainment, and the observation that the line implies an omniscient narrator with foresight and hindsight (a narrator-question brush).
  • Reader-effect and reception material: the lead's standing theory that the book's front section is built as a test of whether the reader actually wants in (Boston-traffic hostile design; the weightlifting progress-curve analogy; the payoff of realizing you know everyone in the room); a panelist's testimony that this was the first week every section was interesting in itself; the 90%-narration fact restated as the single best reading-comprehension aid (pages that read like dialogue but are recounted narration).

Theories & evidence

THEORY: Videophony's arc has fully happened — and the all-caps headers are the clickbait-preview form arriving early

  • Crux: media-prescience
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The section's own arc worked through: the double-bind (attention commanded vs paid, the fugue-doodle fantasy collapsing), the stress findings (the untrustworthy-face survey; the Nixon-debate comparison among seniors), masks to composite masks to tableaus, OMM as doublespeak, and the anti-vanity return of voice-only as status. [00:10–00:35]
    • [inference] The Zoom-era mapping, made from inside a Zoom call: dressing for the call, the mirror check, the 45-minute-late callback problem — plus the noted one thing Wallace couldn't anticipate: mute antics (and, per the late-arriving panelist, newborn wrangling). [00:15–00:29]
    • [inference] The status-cycle instantiations: celebrities' wired headphones as declared fashion statement, the flip-phone renunciation trend, big-TV-then-smallest-TV cycles, the pour-over coffee shop as machine-refusal chic — each mapped to the anti-vanity closure of the videophony curve. [00:46–00:49]
    • [inference] The header theory: the all-caps section heads read as the ancestor of the SEO/Instagram preview — the bullet-point front-load for readers who won't commit, headlines that grew into mini-articles — offered by the panel's marketing professional with the current-best-practice corroboration. [00:11–00:13]
    • [text] The This Is Water pairing: worship beauty and you will always feel ugly — the videophony psychology recognized as the speech's worship logic years early, with one panelist hearing Marathe's voice under the whole section. [00:42–00:44]
  • Notes: The archive's videophony material (mtz-ep03's workout; ic-part67's filter-is-a-veil) gains a third community's instantiation set; the all-caps-as-clickbait theory is this session's original contribution and pairs with the unresolved exam-question reading as competing accounts of the same formal oddity.

THEORY: Himself is what Jim called HIS father — the name, like the tennis-player project, recurses through the generations

  • Crux: joi-father-scene (re-keyed from proto-incandenza; with incandenza-autobiography for the As-of-Yore closure)
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The find: in the garage section, the monologuist — Jim's father — refers to his own father as Himself (located on-air at p. 163, ASR-derived: the one-and-only-himself-in-his-wooden-glory line, the grandfather watching the match) — the epithet Hal's generation uses for JOI already in use two generations up; the panel initially placed it one generation off and corrected itself on air. [01:34–01:37]
    • [text] The project recursion: JOI's father announces he will create a great tennis player (near-great himself, his son will be the real thing) — exactly what JOI is elsewhere said to have attempted with his own sons; the panel names the Sierpinski shape of it. [01:24–01:26]
    • [text] The closure: endnote 24's As of Yore, whose filmography synopsis reads "A middle-aged tennis instructor, preparing to instruct his son in tennis, becomes intoxicated in the family’s garage and subjects his son to a rambling monologue while the son weeps and perspires." (n. 24) — JOI filmed this very scene; Three Cheers for Cause and Effect likewise encodes the Avril/architect affair, and the narcoleptic-aerobics film echoes the laid-off BC janitor. [01:42–01:44]
    • [text] The echo across generations: the grandfather's dying plea in print's words — "I’m so scared of dying without ever being really seen." and "That I was in there, out there in the heat, listening, webbed with nerves?" (p. 168) — heard against Hal's I'm-in-here; the panel also floats the recursion speculation that a silent, endured Jim could have read to HIS father as mute (the conversationalist scene one loop earlier). [01:38–01:42]
    • [inference] The abuse frame: the monologue read as object-handling (the son as another object to be treated correctly), apology and harm alternating, the drunk relived through the child — with the panel's potential-as-curse consolidation (talent as its own expectation; the thrice-waved hanky; here-lies-a-promising-old-man). [01:26–01:34]
  • Notes: The himself-naming find is the session's prize — a checkable, page-anchored datum that makes the epithet itself generational (print-verify the p. 163 line). The I-was-in-there echo is strong connective tissue for the lineage material; the boneless-Christ backlit image is noted as shared vocabulary with the conversationalist scene (joi-father-scene brush).

THEORY: Hal's identity is assigned, not owned — the prodigy label fed to him is the beginning of the end visible from chapter one

  • Crux: hal-condition
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [text] The textual hook, straight from print: "Hal Incandenza is now being encouraged to identify himself as a late-blooming prodigy and possible genius at tennis" (p. 155) — the identification supplied from outside, like the post-pubescent plateau-hopping that others rank and narrate (fourth in the U.S., sixth on the continent; keeping his head). [01:10–01:13]
    • [inference] The chapter-one connection: the YoG interview room where everyone speaks for an apparently empty Hal is read as this process completed — he's in the room and nobody is there because the self was always other-assembled; the panel's formulation: is he the tableau being projected upon, or the figurant making the film? [01:11–01:16]
    • [inference] The consumer-society parallel drawn live: the mask-then-hook sales logic (create the need, sell the compensation) applied to identity — society tells you what you are and sells you the upkeep — offered as the same annular curve the videophony section formalizes. [01:14–01:16]
  • Notes: An early-season articulation of the assigned-identity lane that the archive's Hal material carries; the tableau-or-figurant formulation is the panel's own and neatly fuses two of the book's image systems.

THEORY: The page-long paragraph is a pain-delivery device — form matched to content, the book as a song

  • Crux: prose-tempo-design
  • Stance: advances
  • Evidence:
    • [inference] The claim, built collaboratively: the garage section's wall-of-words paragraphs inflict the endurance they depict — ten-year-old Jim would have loved to skip this chapter and couldn't; the reader's slog is the boy's. [01:18–01:21]
    • [text] The key-change observation: the preceding section's legalistic prescriptivism (party-by-party Q&A) slams into raw descriptivist child-perspective — read as Wallace changing key mid-song, with his own prescriptivism/descriptivism essays invoked. [01:21–01:23]
    • [text] The script texture: stage direction embedded in speech Shakespeare-style (the garage-door business readable only from the father's unquoted words) — no quotation marks anywhere in the scene. [01:23–01:24]
    • [secondary] The song frame: the panel recalls Wallace's ending-as-song defense (the book ends where the rhythm ends) and generalizes it — the writing's difficulty tracks each scene's emotional content like a soundtrack. [01:19–01:20]
  • Notes: Fourth prose-tempo sighting across the archive's digestions and the first from the pain-infliction angle — the claim that difficulty is administered, not incidental. The book-as-song recall brushes the right-frame/ending material without provenance (the panel doesn't source the quote; the archive's provenance thread handles that).

Themes

Media and self-presentation (videophony now; worship-beauty); fathers and sons (the garage monologue's recursions; potential as curse); institutions and complicity (the urine economy); identity as assignment (the prodigy label; tableau vs figurant); form as content (the pain paragraph, the key change).
