Clockless and voiceless, Gately tells time by the angle and color of the window-light — window-light as sundial, the same instrument Erdedy used at the book's front (004). What he's computing matters to him: 1600h. is sponge-bath, shift-change, and Mr. Bouncety-Bounce time, the institutional day experienced entirely as light on a wall.
