the weight room: the hundred-key parable
Suppose I were to give you a key ring with ten keys. With, no, with a hundred keys, and I were to tell you that one of these keys will unlock it, this door we’re imagining opening in onto all you want to be, as a player. How many of the keys would you be willing to try?
Context
Lyle's actual coaching, overheard under the roaring: a hundred keys on a ring, one of which "will unlock it, this door we're imagining opening in onto all you want to be, as a player." The parable is pedagogy in the deepest sense — not about muscle at all but about a player's willingness to risk failure — and it's delivered to a boy (Rader) sweating out his own fear of losing. The weight room's genuine instruction turns out to concern the mind's relation to error, dispensed by the mystic on the towel dispenser while the barbells crash around him.
