Port Washington: the branded body on the company Free List

quote

You have to let your company of choice spraypaint their logo on your strings if you want to be on their Free List for sticks, is the universal junior deal.

Context

The institution's other economy: the junior body is advertising space. To get free gear you "let your company of choice spraypaint their logo on your strings" — Dunlop's dot-and-circumflex, Head's Taoist paraboloid — the sponsor's mark literally painted onto the instrument the player swings. Enfield's antifashion refusals (no racquet-covers, shirts untucked) are the counter-gesture, a "careful nonpride," but the underlying deal is that a ranked athletic body is a surface companies rent. Schacht's insistence on his own discontinued sticks is the scene's one small act of not being owned.
