The horizontal turn of scene 170 doesn't lift — it runs the entire scene. Hal narrates all of it supine, "coccyx... numb from the pressure of the floor," the NASA glass "rising when my rib cage rose," everything reduced to what he can reach without standing into a tennis player. The body that "would on the whole have preferred not to play" simply stays down; the refusal to be vertical is the refusal to compete, sustained across an entire chapter.
