The thing about Wayne is he’s all business. [...] His emotions emerge in terms of velocity. Intelligence as strategic focus. His play, like his manner in general, seems to Schacht less alive than undead.
Context
Wayne is the body reduced to pure instrument, destined for the Show and already living there: "all business," face "blankly rigid, with the hypertonic masking of schizophrenics and Zen adepts," his feeling wholly displaced into the ball — "his emotions emerge in terms of velocity." Schacht reads him as "less alive than undead," which is the cost of the automatic beauty: the more completely the body becomes the game's medium, the less of an inhabiting self is left over. The perfect athletic instrument reads, to a peer, as a haunting.
