the silent survey
Pemulis activated her Third Rail and played with her chair as he made a very quick survey of the material on her desk. Activating the P.A. mike was out of all question. Two of her five drawers were still locked.
Context
Under the clown suit, disciplined tradecraft. Pemulis crosses the pitch-black lobby "noiselessly NE-SW," lifts the squeaking hall door to keep it quiet, listens at Rusk's and Tavis's doors (reading each room by sound alone — who has a shirt off, who is alone), and tosses Lateral Alice Moore's desk in "a very quick survey," registering exactly which drawers stay locked and ruling out the P.A. mike as too loud a risk. Every move is weighed for noise and exposure; the reconnaissance is methodical, reversible, and leaves no trace. The counter-surveillant's real skill isn't the disguise, it's the silence.
