The archive's own title block does the disguise's bookkeeping: the scare-quotes around 'JOURNALIST' and 'HELEN' and the word "putative" mark every credential as manufactured. The article isn't journalism — it's pocket litter, a single published clip that has to exist so that a "Helen Steeply, contributing editor" can be checked into reality before she gets near Orin. Even the content is chosen for cover value: a lurid Boston crime gives a Southwest-bureau byline a Boston bona fide and a demonstration of exactly the "searching and fearless journalistic doggedness" the legend needs to project.
