Drunk, seated across from a bruised stranger who "strongly resembles my wife," the quadruple agent lets the cover slip into barroom intimacy and states his actual situation — the target he's hunting, the friends he's positioned to betray, the phone call that would do it ("It is for her I betray my friends and cell, the cause of my nation"). Kate hands the confession straight back to him: "You're spying and betraying Switzerland to try and keep alive somebody with a hook and spinal fluid and no skull in an irreversible coma?" A security breach performed as loneliness — the operative unloading his whole clandestine ledger onto the one person he judges too broken, and too randomly met, to matter.
