Two named mask-sightings, logged for the motif-thread with their meaning routed elsewhere. In Gately's dream the Disease is an "impressive authoritative figure" trolling a shepherd's crook "from behind a mask that was simply the plain yellow smily-face circle that accompanied invitations to have a nice day"; and here Joelle's veil momentarily becomes "a screen on which might well be projected a casual and impressive black and yellow smily-face, grinning." The substance-as-masked-Sergeant-at-Arms is addiction-recovery's sermon, and the veil-over-Joelle's-face is disability-deformity's; what the surveillance-disguise lens registers is only the recurring apparatus — a smily-face mask as the emblem worn by whatever is watching and waiting (the same emblem the Entertainment's cartridge and the A.F.R.'s leader wear), and the veil functioning, for an instant, as a projection screen rather than a shield.
