Joelle returns / the Sheriff's car
melt soaked the veil and made it adhere to the features below
Context
The concealment instrument fails at the exact hour of maximum surveillance. Wet with snowmelt, the veil clings and models the face it exists to hide, so that "She looked now just like a linen-pale version of what she really looked like" — the disguise, saturated, betraying its wearer by rendering her true shape in negative. It is the veil's operational half (dd owns the body-and-shame half): a one-way screen defeated by weather into a one-way-the-wrong-way instrument, revealing precisely what it was worn to withhold, in front of the federal lady, the wheelchairs, and the law.
