Gately struggles to try and get his knee up so he can see to write ‘LENZ. WHITE WIG. ALWAYS NORTH. ALWAYS ON PHONE.’ Again it looks cuneiform though, illegible.
Context
Even flat on his back in the Trauma Wing, Gately's House-Staff counter-surveillance instinct is compiling a dossier. The log — "LENZ. WHITE WIG. ALWAYS NORTH. ALWAYS ON PHONE." — is a field-report on the resident he's been watching, and its four data-points are precisely Lenz's tradecraft-parody signatures from 105/142: the disguise (white wig), the movement discipline (always north), the operational habit (always on phone). Rendered "cuneiform" and "illegible" by his injury, it's the watcher's report he can no longer actually write — surveillance reduced to unreadable marks, the observation intact but the record lost.
