Context
Intelligence discipline: trust nothing un-verified, even the cooperative. The captured WYYY engineer talks fully "under the mere descriptive threat" — the reputation of the "technical interview" does the work before a hand is laid on him — yet the A.F.R. runs "a formal technical interview" anyway, "justified in order to verify," with Marathe, "the best lay judge of Americans' veracity which the cell possessed," rendering the call. The method is applied not because they doubt him but because verification is doctrine; a source believed is still a source interrogated. (The engineer's subsequent fate as a field-test Subject is entertainment-self's; left there.)
