the ad-industry reordering: the ad-man who packaged Gentle

quote

a certain partnerless metro-Boston ad agency was doing so well that it was more out of ennui and a sense of unlikely challenge that P. Tom Veals consented to manage PR for the fringe candidacy of a former crooner and schmaltz-mogul who went around swinging a mike and ranting about literally clean streets and creatively refocused blame and rocketing people’s waste into the forgiving chill of infinite space.

Context

The commercial and the political reorderings meet in one man: the same P. Tom Veals whose agency invented InterLace "consented to manage PR for the fringe candidacy" of Gentle — "a former crooner... ranting about literally clean streets and creatively refocused blame and rocketing people's waste." C.U.S.P.'s three planks (clean streets, a manufactured Other to blame, shoot-wastes-into-space) are here described as an ad campaign, the founding of O.N.A.N. as just another Viney & Veals account. The nation is a product Veals packaged on his way up.
