The false eidetic reputation, and a genuine sentence-knot: Marathe remembers forgetting — he can recall the incidents of failed recall, which is exactly the second-order memory a truly eidetic observer would never need. His memory is a professional instrument with known, privately catalogued defects, and the A.F.R.'s faith in it is one more layer of the scene's disguise theme.
