Schtitt and Mario (p. 82)
Gerhardt Schtitt does not so much dislike the modern O.N.A.N.ite U.S. of A. as find it hilarious and frightening at the same time. Probably mostly just alien. This should not be rendered in exposition like this, but Mario Incandenza has a severely limited range of verbatim recall.
Context
The narrator breaks frame mid-scene to apologize for paragraph-form exposition — and blames Mario's memory. What we're allowed to read is shaped by what the witness's recall can hold: Schtitt's talk can't come as dialogue because Mario can't reproduce it. Memory as narrative device stated outright, and the exact inverse of Hal's page-Xerox gift fifteen pages later.
