Context
Carlisle's reading, recorded not adopted: the bleached players on the remembered broadcast "are ghosts now, conjured by Gately's memory" — the whole retrospect a séance, the unnamed B.U. punter (Orin) among the conjured. It makes the medium explicit: everything in 166-175's flashbacks arrives through the faculty Gately is leaning on to survive, and it renders what it retrieves in wraith-tones.
