Context
Hal audits the form his memories take: stills, not footage — this from the filmmaker's son, in a scene that opens with one of Himself's cartridges playing. Then the second shoe: he catches his own memory confabulating, flagging a detail as impossible on internal evidence. A first-person narrator telling you outright that some of what he's just shown you is invented.
