Context
Carlisle's reading, recorded not adopted: Joelle, who impersonated Death itself in JOI's films, now "looks like death" beneath a veil nobody can read, on her way to eliminate her own map — Death playing at dying, with the map/face hidden even as it's about to be eliminated. The veil makes the face-as-map illegible before the elimination makes it final.
