at a certain point the goal was to minimize future other hard cases by making it clear that W. Sorkin was one book you couldn’t just flagrantly stay in the hole with and lie to for month after month without having your map seriously fucking reconfigured.
Context
Gately Abiding in the Trauma Ward by remembering his criminal apprenticeship: the graduated-violence doctrine he and Fackelmann enforced for Whitey Sorkin on compulsive gamblers — Gately's "first exposure to the concept of real addiction." The idiom finds its middle register: not elimination but reconfiguration, the map as a face that coercion redraws rather than erases — exactly the gradation the Twin Towers' staged beatings were designed around. (And note the word: what O.N.A.N. did to the continent was also a Reconfiguration.)
