Hester Thrale can still be heard way off down Warren Street, receding, as Gately wobbles back from the Nuck’s map and sits heavily down in the little street, in shadow except for his huge head in the Nucks’ car’s lights, sitting there with his head on his knees.
Context
The fight's last beat: shot, toe broken, Gately has just finished stomping the supine Nuck's face and the narration calls what he steps away from "the Nuck's map." Map-as-face here isn't threat or brag but plain battlefield description — the idiom fully naturalized at the exact moment its logic (violence done to faces, payback for maps) has cost Gately the wound the rest of his book is spent in.
