Context
Carlisle's reading, recorded not adopted: he sets this line directly against Boston AA's pain-through-recovery doctrine of p. 446 — the second world is to players what sober pain is to addicts, pain with purpose versus the "large external world where is cold and pain without purpose." On his reading Schtitt and the White Flag crocodiles are teaching the same lesson in the same week of the book: the only livable territories are the deliberately bounded ones.
