Fackelmann's scam; the wraith returns (p. 932)
the Faxter’d done what any drug addict in possession of his Substance would do when faced with fatal news and attendant terror: Facklemann’d made a fucking beeline for their luxury-stripped home and familiar safe-feeling hearth and had plopped down and immediately fired up the Sterno cooker and cooked up and tied off and shot up and nailed his chin to his chest and kept it there with staggering quantities of Dilaudid, trying to mentally blot out the reality of the fact that he was going to get demapped if he didn’t take some kind of decisive remedial action at once.
Context
Kite has told Fackelmann he can already smell him biodegrading, and this is the response: not flight but the corner, the Sterno cooker, and enough Dilaudid to blot the death sentence out. The passage where the theme's two elimination-machines converge — the Substance erases the map from the inside while Sorkin's crew comes to erase it from the outside — and Gately, remembering, can "Identify fully." Also the passage that teaches Gately what an addict is at root: "a thing that basically hides." ("Facklemann'd" is as written — the text spells the name "Fackelmann" everywhere else.)
