Joelle spins a dazzling recursive rhetoric — hiding your hiding, the mask of acceptance, the annular shame-about-shame — and Gately answers the whole performance with three flat syllables. "Use less words" is the single-entendre demand for plainness, and it is the one move evasive brilliance cannot metabolize, because it refuses the rhetorical field entirely. Gately's flat-footedness is not stupidity (Joelle spends the scene insisting he's brighter than he thinks); it is a different register, one that treats language as a way of saying the thing rather than a place to hide the thing.
