Joelle visits Gately: 'I get to choose'

Sincerity-as-choice, reprised and applied to the cliché itself. As in 139, belief here is an election, not a detection — Joelle doesn't just find the slogan true, she chooses to live by it, with the fellowship there for the sticking ("they'll help me stick to the choice"). Recovery becomes the decision to take the banal-but-true instruction seriously, sincerity as an act of will exercised against her own long habit of arm's-length irony. (Gately's parallel runs underneath the whole visit: Abiding "between heartbeats," the cliché "The Present" made grimly literal — "it's no accident they call it The Present.")
