St. Elizabeth's: sincerity flowing one way

Gately's muteness turns the whole scene into a diagram of the register war, with sincerity flowing in one direction only. Because he cannot speak, the earnest register pours toward him and never back: Ewell's confession, Pat Montesian's plain reassurance that "the House was a community and it took care of its own," Joelle's silent washcloth over his enormous face, Thrust's whole loyal report. Gately receives sincerity in floods and can produce none of it — the one channel that fails is his own outgoing one, the consolation for Ewell dying in his throat. And this one-directionality is, exactly, the Program's lesson dramatized in the flesh: you get well first by receiving what you cannot yet give, taking in the banal earnest care of the community from a position of total powerlessness. The wound makes literal what recovery asks — sincerity accepted before it can be returned.
