Hal and Mario in the dark: the field guide to lying

Against Mario's spin-reversal, Hal offers the ironist's opposite achievement: a connoisseur's taxonomy of mendacity. He can't neutralize a lie, so he's catalogued it — the still-and-centered dominators, the fluttery self-deprecators who trade on pity, the buriers who slip the lie through "like a tiny bug through a windowscreen," the Kamikazes, the rococo over-elaborators, and the subtype who learned to lie "tersely, sparely, seeming somehow bored." It's a brilliant instrument and a lonely one: where Mario's belief makes speech true, Hal's expertise makes all speech suspect, a field of tells to be read. The scene sets the two epistemologies side by side without ranking them out loud — and lets Hal himself concede the taxonomy's limit ("nobody can always tell… their lies are too close to the truth's heart"), which sets up the monster.
