Carlisle's grave-dream exegesis, recorded not adopted: the sad kid is Hal (moving mouth, no sound — the Ch. 1 speech failure), the head is JOI's, and Joelle's asking-if-they-knew-him is Hamlet V.i at Yorick's grave; plus his mechanism conjecture that the Master cartridge somehow survived the microwave inside Jim's head. Our digest adopts the Hal/Hamlet reading and declines the head-contents mechanism.
