JOI's filmography (pp. 985–986)

quote

Because the twelve years of Incandenza’s directorial activity also coincided with large shifts in film venue—from public art cinemas, to VCR-capable magnetic recordings, to InterLace TelEntertainment laser dissemination and reviewable storage disk laser cartridges—and because Incandenza’s output itself comprises industrial, documentary, conceptual, advertorial, technical, parodic, dramatic noncommercial, nondramatic (‘anti-confluential’) noncommercial, nondramatic commercial, and dramatic commercial works, this filmmaker’s career presents substantive archival challenges.

Context

The theme's core document opens by admitting it can't be trusted: "as complete as we are able to make it," and closing the preamble, "the list's order and completeness are, at this point in time, not definitive." The oeuvre exists only as archival reconstruction — which is why every scene-side film conversation (064's mystery, 132's séance, 179's lecture) has this list as its silent referent. The venue clause is also a capsule history of the book's whole entertainment infrastructure, art-house to InterLace, run through in one career. The preamble's "at least four different changes of corporate name" plays out down the list as Meniscus Films → Heliotrope Films → Latrodectus Mactans Productions → Poor Yorick Entertainment Unlimited; reading that as an arc from optics names (Meniscus is glossed as a lens in 020's raw; heliotrope, sun-turning) to death names (the widow spider, Yorick's skull) is an enrichment — inferred, not stated.
