Lenz's payback: Gately shot

The scene's second-to-last line; the colon opens onto one last word of dialogue ("Ready?") and the scene ends. Shot, going into shock, Gately's POV becomes explicitly a camera: faces of the people lifting him "coming down in a fish-eye lens" — wide-angle distortion, the lens you get when the viewer is flat on his back and the world converges overhead. It's the book doing to Gately what JOI's crib-lens/neonatal-wobble apparatus does by design elsewhere (159/178): trauma renders the sufferer's eye as a specific piece of optical equipment.
