White Flag speakers: the Raquel Welch mask (pp. 371–372)
who apparently liked to pretend It was Raquel Welch, the former celluloid sex goddess of the father’s glandular heyday, and he even called It ‘RAQUEL!’ in moments of incestuous extremity
Context
The screen's celluloid hit, in the skinny hard-faced speaker's etiology monologue: the foster father's abuse of the catatonic daughter runs through a film image — a "celluloid sex goddess" of his "glandular heyday," imported into the bedroom first as fantasy and then literally as apparatus, "a cheesy rubber Raquel Welch full-head pull-on mask, with hair," pulled over the girl's face nightly. A screen-star's face as physical overlay on a body that can't consent or even move: the film image doing harm off-screen, in the dark, at one remove from any actual cartridge. The mask object itself is masks/veils territory per THEME-MAP; what the screen catches for this theme is the celluloid pedigree of the face chosen.
