The source is named as nearly as Gately's memory can name anything: the torture restages the aversion-therapy scene from "the one about ultra-violence and sadism" — the Clockwork Orange apparatus, identified only by periphrasis and pedigree (a Kite favorite, a cartridge from the M.P.'s era; the title identification is ours, inferred — the raw never names the film). The book's final act of violence is a film re-enactment, mounted by thugs who learned it as home entertainment: spectation teaching people how to hurt each other, which the attaché serial has argued from the other end since p. 33. Gately's mispronunciation footnote ("saddism") keeps even the atrocity filed under his viewing-level vocabulary.
