Accomplice!, the blizzard, and the Weston house — "But this was the man who…"
But this was the man who made Accomplice!, whose sensibility informed the hetero-hardcore Möbius Strips and the sado-periodontal Fun with Teeth and several other projects that were just thoroughgoingly nasty and sick.
Context
(And, returning at pp. 954-955:) The scene's emotional engine, stated twice from opposite directions: the meek silent father at the window cannot be reconciled with the filmography's cruelty, and yet the filmography is the father — "But this was the man who made Accomplice!" The oeuvre functions as the record of an interior the family never got access to any other way; Hal keeps running the reconciliation and it keeps failing, which is the scene's whole method of mourning. (Fun with Teeth is the same shelf title Pemulis puzzled over an hour earlier in 172 — the two scenes are one continuous morning of filial filmography-work.)
