She’s addressing his reflection in the quartered window, watching him put the treadle down carefully on the desk and struggle with the pack on his back. […] She points the stapler at the image of the Bolex on the image of his head. ‘Are we On-Air?’
Context
Mario enters "trying to film the cock of the Moms’s head and the phone’s extended antenna against the cumulus of her hair from behind, capturing her back unawares" — candid footage of his own mother — and fails, because "she can see his reflection in the window." The greeting scene then plays out entirely in reflection: her arms go up in a V while she faces the glass, she addresses his image, and her question about the camera is pointed at "the image of the Bolex on the image of his head." Window-as-mirror interposed between mother and son before either faces the other; 'Are we On-Air?' is her first substantive question.
