Mario's Bolex walk and Avril on sadness — "She puts her hand out straight…"
She puts her hand out straight at his head’s camera, a kind of distant stiff-arm as she passes: […] ‘I understand,’ Mario says, using his arms to turn himself around and pointing the lens at the bare wall.
Context
Felicity Zweig in a towel, stiff-arming not Mario but "his head’s camera" — the twice-repeated 'I’m wearing a towel.' is addressed to the lens as a thing with its own agency and appetite. Mario's response is the scene's ethics of filming enacted physically: he can't just avert his eyes (the camera is his head), so he rotates his whole body and points the lens at the bare wall. Consent and refusal negotiated with an apparatus; afterward he still "gets a couple seconds of Zweig hurrying away in the towel, tiny little bird steps, looking terribly fragile."
