The A.F.R. search of the shop
A.F.R.’s U.S.A. cell’s leader, Fortier, the son of a Glen Almond glass-blower, had allowed none of the mirrors to be broken or dismantled. In all other respects, the search had been methodical and thorough.
Context
The catalogued mirror phrase: in a search that unshelves and trash-samples every cartridge in the Antitois' shop and rolls the owners' bodies in construction-plastic, the mirrors alone are exempt — "none of the mirrors to be broken or dismantled," on the order of a glass-blower's son. The novel motivates the exemption only by parentage. The A.F.R. kills with optics both times: elsewhere in the novel, a mirror-ambush plan and a "mirrors pointed opposite ways" reading make the same point — the organization that weaponizes mirrors preserves them like ordnance. Same passage: the volunteer-viewing rig (a consumer TP "set up for volunteer viewing," Tassigny "fitted by M. Broullîme with EEG wires and strapped in before the viewer," pp. 722-723) replays the attaché serial's lethal-spectation apparatus in deliberate, instrumented form — a rig the motif catalogues don't yet carry.
