Lyle and JOI in the weight room — "Incandenza’d open up and pour his…"
Incandenza’d open up and pour his heart’s thickest chyme right out there for all to be affected and potentially scarred by. E.g. one night Mario, leaning way forward into the police lock’s support, drifted awake to the sound of his father saying that if he had to grade his marriage he’d give it a C–.
Context
The other half of the vigil: what the son absorbs while he keeps it. Drunk, Himself pours out "his heart's thickest chyme" — the narrator flags it as matter "all" present are liable to be "scarred by," and the only ones present are Lyle and the half-asleep son. So Mario is the receptacle for the father's injudicious late-night openness, waking into confessions no child should be handed. (The content he surfaces to — the graded marriage — is the family system's business, and belongs to that theme; what's dyad here is the transaction: a father who scars by opening up, and the son positioned to catch it.)
