Lyle and JOI in the weight room
Mario literally standing by in case the ice bucket ran out or Himself needed moral support getting to the urinal. Mario often fell asleep as the hour got severe, drifted in and out, slept upright and leaning forward, weight borne by his police lock and lead receptacle.
Context
The whole dyad in one image: the drinking father down in the weight room till all hours, and the disabled son standing sentry beside him, braced upright in his police lock, awake for the ice and the walk to the urinal, asleep on his feet when the hour gets severe but still there, still propped up beside the man. It's the purest instance of the theme's vigil-motif — not a son who is raised by the father but a son who attends him, who keeps watch over the father's decline the way you'd sit up with an invalid. Himself's best fathering went to Mario in 071; here Mario's best sonhood goes right back, a night-long guard duty over a father slowly drinking himself toward the microwave.
