Avril's operations, glimpsed running quietly in the background of the boys' drug logistics. The big End-of-Fiscal-Year fundraiser pits E.T.A. against Québec's Junior Davis and Wightman squads, "invited down under very quiet lowprofile political conditions via the good expatriate offices of Avril Incandenza" — the Separatist-listed émigrée of the founding record (020) putting her cross-border political connections to work arranging an exhibition, discreetly, from inside the family's institution. And a line later the other lever: "Mario will get to come along if Avril can convince C.T. to bring him along" to shoot footage. In two glancing clauses the mother is shown working both her external web (the Québec channels) and the internal one (persuading the uncle-administrator on Mario's behalf). Avril never appears in the scene; she operates through offices and influence, the family's fixer arranging things from off-stage — the mode the anthology's set-pieces will make central, caught here in passing.
