Avril's unconditional love, delivered as an announcement — and the announcement is the pressure. She "had taken pains to let all three of her children know" that her love and pride were untethered from performance, and the very next clause records that Hal's lexical prodigy "had made his mother proud." The having-taken-pains is the tell: love this loudly declared unconditional is love the children are made constantly aware they are being loved unconditionally despite, which reinstalls exactly the conditional scoreboard it disavows. The reassurance keeps the achievement in the frame even as it insists achievement doesn't matter, so that the child cannot succeed without hearing that his success was unnecessary, or rest without the memory that he was pre-forgiven for resting. It is the same structure as the trust-performance of 013 — a mother whose stated release from expectation functions as its most durable form.
