Avril Incandenza, a fiend for light, has the whole bank of overheads going, two torchères and some desk lamps, and a B&H cigarette on fire in the big clay ashtray Mario’d made her at Rindge and Latin School.
Context
Mario's night-walk through E.T.A. ends at the one lit doorway — "the doorless Dean of Females's office. Meaning the Moms is: In." Avril keeps her office blazing, every overhead and torchère and desk lamp going, and works in a room with no door at all, while across the hall C.T. sits behind double doors. It's the mother's whole operational signature rendered as lighting and architecture: maximally illuminated, maximally accessible, nothing to hide because everything's on display — the same openness-as-performance the secrets hide behind. The doorlessness reads as radical availability and functions as total visibility, a room you can't help but be seen entering.
