Gately and the wraith — "Make something so bloody compelling it…"

Here at last is the Entertainment's stated purpose, and it is a rescue. The wraith describes the cartridge's origin as a last resort against a self "fall[ing] into the womb of solipsism, anhedonia, death in life" — an object made so compelling it could reverse that fall, pull a person back out of the sealed cage of the self. This is the artifact-purpose the theme claims as its own: the Entertainment was conceived not as a weapon but as an anti-solipsism device, a thing so engaging it could break the spell of a mind collapsing inward. That the same solipsism-reversing power is precisely what makes it lethal — that total engagement is total captivity — is the tragedy the whole book turns on. The cure for death-in-life was built to be irresistible, and irresistible is another word for fatal.
