Context
Marathe names the American disease with a phrase the whole theme has been building toward: "this pleasure of not choosing." His argument is that a culture which makes pleasure and good feelings the thing to choose, the thing to give yourself away to, has actually chosen against choosing — because if every choice is aimed at feeling good, then the real want underneath is the want to stop wanting, to be relieved of the burden of deciding at all. That is the appetite the Entertainment satisfies perfectly: it is the pleasure of not choosing made total, the final surrender the culture has been rehearsing. Love that is only pursuit of pleasure is just this surrender in slow motion; the cartridge is its consummation.
