Context
The emblem of the lethal-pleasure object is a smiley face and a promise that happiness need no longer be pursued. Stamped on the F.L.Q.'s decoy cartridges — and, it turns out, on the real thing's cases too — the grinning face and its motto ("one need no longer pursue happiness") advertise the exact terminus the theme keeps circling: an end to wanting, delivered as a gift. The pursuit of happiness, the country's founding verb, is cancelled by an embossed smile; the object promises to make the striving itself unnecessary, which is precisely how it kills.
